As a banker, I feel that banks have gone insane with the outreach and sales mentality

Main Post:

I work in retail banking, and what management thinks is acceptable for outreach, pushing follow up appointment, sales practices, etc is off the charts.

First, our bank finds it acceptable to call someone 3 times a month....every month If they don’t answer. That is insane to me. That is FAR too much, and if my bank did that to me I’d frankly switch banks.

They also think that for consumer banking people need quarterly meetings. Not even financial advisors meet with clients that much. People’s needs with this sort of stuff do not change on a monthly basis.

I am expected to have a full relationship and life conversation with everyone that sits with me. That includes someone that is simply cashing a check. I am also expected to get a follow up appointment with someone cashing a check. Never mind that person may already be in the bank once a week.

Sales practice are borderline unethical. We position as making sure we are helping people life goals but the reality is that we just want to sale them a credit card or use our bank for investments. People see right through it and then management tells us we need to just position things better.

I don’t even know if this is the correct community for this, but when did banking turn into being a user car salesmen type deal? To me it’s insane, and especially after Wells Fargo I can’t believe it has continued.

Top Comment: I work at a small bank with just a few branches across a couple towns, but I'm blown away when I read stuff like this. My bank and our competitor banks that are about the same size as us never consider doing stuff like this. We aren't in sales at all, and tellers don't have some quota of new customers they have to reach. We have advertising of course, but maybe we are just reliant on that "good ole boy" mentality in a small town where everybody knows everybody, and if you don't know someone, you can find a connection somewhere. If my bank magically switched to a "salesman" type of bank, I'd leave the same day; it's sales, not banking. So I do sympathize with you.
